Both MMPs and TIMPs play crucial roles in ECM degradation and are involved in tumor invasion and metastasis, serving as major regulatory proteins of malignant tumor progression. TIMP-1 is upregulated in various cancers, including liver cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer, and can serve as a potential biomarker for tumor progression and prognosis.
